VFI welcomes announcement of rural funding initiative

The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) has welcomed today’s (4th October) announcement by the Department of Rural and Community Development that €21.6m will be used to fund the 2017 Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

In making the announcement the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring TD, said the funds are an important part of his Department’s work to rejuvenate and revitalise rural Ireland.

As the representative body for publicans who live and work in these towns the VFI has long advocated for such investment.

Padraig Cribben, Chief Executive, VFI, says: “Today’s announcement is welcome news for many towns and villages across Ireland. While major cities are have recovered since the recession rural areas remain affected by decreasing populations and infrastructure deficits. Government investment in rural Ireland is one significant step towards helping these areas regain lost ground.”

Editor’s note:

The 2017 Town and Village Renewal Scheme, which was launched in April this year, focuses on projects which can help to enhance and develop rural towns and villages, with a particular emphasis on stimulating economic development. Funding awarded to individual towns and villages this year generally range from €20,000 to €100,000, with 50 projects receiving between €100,000 and €200,000 for more ambitious proposals.
