Like the rest of the country publicans were disappointed when Ireland failed to qualify for World Cup 2018. From a business perspective our members are now hoping for a knock-out stage packed with big nations.
Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) Chief Executive Padraig Cribben explains: “Ireland making it to a major finals is an event like no other with fans flocking to pubs for that special communal experience.
“We didn’t make it this time so publicans will be hoping the big nations make it through to the knock-out stages. Most customers will have their favourites and as the tournament progresses interest will mount and I think you will see that reflected in pub ‘attendances’.
“Many pubs have organised Word Cup Sweepstakes as a way of generating interest. Irish charity Goal have tapped into this with its own pub sweepstakes, supported by the VFI, which is raising money for the charity’s projects worldwide.”
Whatever the results, for the next four weeks pubs will provide a safe and enjoyable environment to watch some cracking matches and celebrate a great sporting occasion.
