Claremorris Community Benefits from Re-Turn Scheme Fundraiser

Local initiative funds life-saving equipment through recycling efforts

In a remarkable example of community spirit, Lorraine Dolan, manager of Gilligan’s Bar in Claremorris, Co. Mayo, has successfully raised funds to purchase a defibrillator for the town. The funds were generated through the innovative use of the Re-Turn scheme, which encourages recycling of cans and bottles.

“We decided to do something positive for our local community with the Re-Turn scheme,” explains Lorraine. “We collected cans like Bulmers, Red Bull, and West Coast Cooler, as well as bottles like 7up and MiWadi. Every week, we brought our haul to SuperValu, where the deposits added up quickly.”

The efforts paid off in a big way. Gilligan’s Bar proudly installed a new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) outside the premises, providing a vital resource for the community. “This defibrillator can save someone’s life,” Lorraine says. “It’s there for anyone in our community who might need emergency medical assistance.”

But the initiative doesn’t stop there. Lorraine and her team have committed to continuing the collection effort until September 2025. All funds raised going forward will support the Claremorris First Responders group, which works in collaboration with the National Ambulance Service. The group often serves as the first line of support during medical emergencies in the area.

“The response from the community has been incredible,” says Lorraine. “Local businesses like Michael Warde’s Pub and the Lighthouse Diner, along with other members of the community, have chipped in by donating cans or cash vouchers. It’s heartening to see how everyone is coming together to support this cause.”

This inspiring initiative highlights the positive impact that local pubs can have on their communities. Lorraine hopes the story will continue to gain attention and inspire others to take similar action.
